PARISH PRESIDENT
RESOLUTION NO.
Title
A resolution requesting the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to consider steps toward improving the conditions of the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge on LA 20 in St. James Parish.
Body
WHEREAS, the bridge across Bayou Chevreuil on LA Highway 20 continues to deteriorate and is in need of major repair and/or replacement; and,
WHEREAS, the Parish Council recognizes that the safety of commuters and the public is the primary concern of the LA Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD) as well as all persons who transverse this highway; and,
WHEREAS, load limits have been instituted and enforced on LA Highway 20 that has virtually stopped all trucking across this major transportation route between St. James and Lafourche Parishes; and,
WHEREAS; the trucking industry and, more particularly, the sugarcane and soil and aggregate trucking operators have been hit the hardest by the increased enforcement of the Bayou Chevreuil load limits; and,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the St. Charles Parish Council, that the LA DOTD is hereby requested to reassess the condition of the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge in an effort to raise the weight limits, if bridge conditions merit such an increase, which will allow the continued use of certain types of trucks and trailers; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the St. Charles Parish Council, that the LA DOTD is hereby requested to expedite the construction of a new bridge across Bayou Chevreuil that will allow heavy truck access and provide for a safe and efficient transportation route for the residents, commuters, and transporters on this extremely important state highway; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the St. Charles Parish Council, that the LA DOTD considers immediate temporary improvements and/or adjustments that will allow continued safe access across the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge until such time as the structure can be permanently replaced.
