Proclamation: "2007 Recycling Day"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the United States General Accounting Office at the request of the U.S. Senate sought recommendations on the current recycling rate in the United States, which is currently at 32%; and,
WHEREAS the United States Environmental Services has issued a goal to increase the national recycling rate to 38% by 2008; and,
WHEREAS, the recycling program in St. Charles Parish has been discontinued due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina damaging all of the recycling plants in the New Orleans area; and,
WHEREAS, recycling still plays a major roll in St. Charles Parish with the Parish Council and Parish President constantly seeking other alternatives that will benefit the residents of St. Charles Parish; and,
WHEREAS, environmental problems have become so complex that many individuals feel they can have no effect on them, however as individuals we have control of our waste reductions and recycling activities; and,
WHEREAS, recycling saves trees, protects wildlife habitat and biodiversity, lowers the use of toxic chemicals, helps curb global warming, stems the flow of water pollution, reduces the need for landfills, reduces the need for incinerators, promotes economic development and contributes to the demand for more recycled products.
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL, AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY DECLARE SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2007, AS
"2007 RECYCLING DAY"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH, AND ENCOURAGE ALL CITIZENS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS WORTHWHILE RECYCLING EFFORT.
