Proclamation: "Williams Syndrome Awareness Month"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that is present at birth, affects one in 10,000 people worldwide and as many as 30,000 individuals in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, Williams Syndrome is characterized by medical and cognitive problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities; and,
WHEREAS, children with Williams Syndrome tend to be social, friendly, and endearing. Nearly everyone with Williams Syndrome loves music, and for some, there is a musicality and eventual talent for music that is far greater than would be expected based on general functioning levels; and,
WHEREAS, the Williams Syndrome Association (WSA), founded in 1982, is a non-profit organization and the most comprehensive resource for people and families living with Williams Syndrome as well as for doctors, researchers, and educators. Through its efforts, from raising public awareness, to funding critical new research, and providing valuable information and support to families, the WSA has improved the quality of life and futures of those affected by Williams Syndrome; and,
WHEREAS, to generate awareness about Williams Syndrome and raise funding for critical WSA programs and initiatives, the WSA has organized May as Williams Syndrome Awareness Month which includes events all across the United States; and,
WHEREAS, the 2015 Metairie WalkForWilliams® will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Zephyr Field located at 6000 Airline Drive in Metairie; registration is at 9:00 am with the walk beginning at 11:00 am; and,
WHEREAS, the Williams Syndrome Association and the families and friends of those with Williams Syndrome should be commended for their hard work, compassion, and courage for educating the country about this rare disorder.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF MAY 2015 AS
"WILLIAMS SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH AND ENCOURAGE ALL CITIZENS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE METAIRIE WALKFORWILLIAMS® TO HELP SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE WILLIAMS SYNDROME ASSOCIATION.
