IN RECOGNITION
 
WHEREAS, Craig Blackburn, is a resident of Luling, Louisiana in St. Charles Parish; and,
WHEREAS, Craig has always been encouraged to set high goals and works very hard toward achieving them; and,
WHEREAS, In 1988, Craig was selected to participate in the PCMR Symposium in Washington, D.C. as a self-advocate.  He was one of the youngest participates; and,
WHEREAS, Craig participated in the 1995 Olympic Torch Run in St. Charles Parish during its passing through Louisiana; and,
WHEREAS, In 1993, Craig was selected as a foreign exchange student to Italy for two weeks and had an audience with Pope John Paul II through the Very Special Arts/Louisiana program under the Department of Education; and,
WHEREAS, Craig, as one of the first St. Charles Parish students in 20 years to achieve in the "Yes I Can 2000" Program, was recognized by the School Board and was recently awarded Outstanding Achievement and selected as a winner in the statewide competition, Academic Category; and,
WHEREAS, Craig received the "Dream Catchers" award for St. Charles Parish on March 31, 2000 in Houma.  The award is for an individual who achieves a goal thought to be unachievable; and,
WHEREAS, Craig received the Cox Cable Inspirational Hero Award for Year 2000 on April 26, 2000; and,
WHEREAS, Craig participated in St. Charles Parish Recreation sports including basketball and baseball; and,
WHEREAS, Craig participated in the Special Olympics for many years in softball, basketball, bowling, and swimming receiving medals in all sports; and,
 
 
WHEREAS, Craig has received awards for outstanding altar server efforts; and,
WHEREAS, Craig is a black belt in karate and received an award for Perseverance and won trophies for form; and,
WHEREAS, Craig has been the Manager of the Hahnville High School Football Team for the past four years and Lettered in Football; and,
WHEREAS, Craig was selected by the Senior class as the male senior with the most spirit; and,
WHEREAS, Craig has played the saxophone in the band during middle school and the first two years of high school; and,
WHEREAS, Craig has been involved in the Jr. Air Force ROTC for four years of high school and in conjunction with that, recently received an award, the Cadet Humanitarian Award, and recognition for reacting appropriately to the needs of a teacher who was having a severe insulin reaction; and,
WHEREAS, Craig has received academic awards for Math and has been on the honor roll; and,
WHEREAS, Craig has held jobs at a family owned snowball stand, at McDonald's in maintenance, and for the past year is currently working at Winn Dixie as a clerk; and,
WHEREAS, upon graduation from Hahnville High in May, 2000, Craig plans to attend Nicholls State University beginning in August; and,
WHEREAS, Craig's philosophy in life is "I can", his pride comes in knowing he has done his best and given his all.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, do hereby offer this tribute and recognition to
 
CRAIG BLACKBURN
"PARISH   OF   PLENTY"
created in 1807 from the county of the
"German Coast", a parish of
unprecedented economic and social
development, known for its
 hospitality, rural living and sporting
opportunitiesÂ… with the added
distinction of being located
on both sides of the
