Proclamation:  “National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day”

Body

P R O C L A M A T I O N

WHEREAS,                     August 21, is recognized as National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day, created by families impacted by fentanyl deaths, and grassroots organizations, bringing awareness to the dangers of illicit fentanyl, and by joining the many voices dedicated to educating the public on the serious dangers of fentanyl poisoning from fake pills and other illicit drugs; and,

WHEREAS,                     fentanyl is the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered, from large cities to rural America, no community is safe from its presence; and,

WHEREAS,                     fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 50 times more potent than heroin and 200 times more potent than morphine; and,

WHEREAS,                     fentanyl is inexpensive, widely available, highly addictive, and potentially lethal.  Drug traffickers are increasingly mixing it with other illicit drugs to drive addiction and create repeat customers, where victims are unaware that fentanyl is in the substance they are ingesting; and,

WHEREAS,                     according to the CDC, an estimated 107,622 people in the United States died of drug overdoses and poisonings in 2021, with 67 percent of those deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl, with only two milligrams of fentanyl being a potentially lethal dose; and,

WHEREAS,                     the Drug Enforcement Association has created a special exhibit to its museum, “The Faces of Fentanyl”, to commemorate the many lives lost from fentanyl poisoning.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, WE THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM AUGUST 21, 2023, AS

“NATIONAL FENTANYL PREVENTION

AND AWARENESS DAY”
