Title
A resolution to request the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet to protect St. Charles Parish and South Louisiana against further wetland erosion and flooding from Lake Pontchartrain.
Body
WHEREAS, the Gulf Outlet was built in 1963 on a straight line through marsh; and,
WHEREAS, the Gulf Outlet, a 76-mile man-made waterway provides deep-draft navigation from the Gulf of Mexico to Port facilities in New Orleans; and,
WHEREAS, the Outlet has contributed greatly to the damage and erosion of the coastline and wetlands in South Louisiana; and,
WHEREAS, the Gulf Outlet has caused problems with salt water intrusion in the LaBranche Wetlands and contributes to flooding problems in St. Charles Parish from Lake Pontchartrain.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL do hereby request the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers take the appropriate steps to close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet to protect St. Charles Parish and the Parishes of South Louisiana from further coastline and wetland damage.
