Proclamation: "Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park is an educational program designed to inspire and prepare middle and high school students to succeed in a global economy; and,
WHEREAS, during the 2009-2010 school year, Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans reached more than 2,700 students and due to popular demand, Capital One/JA Finance Park will again be available for the 2010-2011 school year; and,
WHEREAS, the Finance Park curriculum introduces students to personal finance and career explorations through classroom instruction complemented by a hands-on experience where students apply learned concepts in a life-like community. During this on-site experience, students assume family and income scenarios and visit businesses to gather information for their personal financial decision-making; they use bank services; contribute to charities; purchase housing, transportation, furnishings, food, health care, and other expenses; and make investment decisions, while working to balance their budgets; and,
WHEREAS, through Finance Park, teachers are given a new approach to teaching economics; students are given a chance to experience education in new, exciting, and imaginative ways; and parents are given an opportunity to participate actively in their child's learning as volunteers alongside Capital One associates. Program components include teacher training, volunteer training, classroom instruction, onsite activity led by volunteers, and follow-up classroom instruction for debriefing, evaluating, and extending the learning experience. The entire experience offers integrated learning, requiring students to use math and language arts skills. Students realize the relevance of learning these skills when they apply the skills and knowledge to a real-life situation; and,
WHEREAS, Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park will be held in St. Charles Parish the week of December 6-10, 2010 and December 13-17, 2010 at Eual J. Landry gym in Hahnville next to the Courthouse; and,
WHEREAS, the schedule for the area Middle Schools are: Harry Hurst, December 6-8th, R. K. Smith, December 9-10th, Albert Cammon, December 13-14th, and J.B. Martin, December 15-17th.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEKS OF DECEMBER 6-10 AND 13-17, 2010, AS
"CAPITAL ONE/JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT FINANCE PARK"
