Title

An ordinance to provide for an additional ad valorem tax exemption of two thousand five hundred dollars of the assessed valuation of property receiving the homestead exemption that is owned and occupied by a qualified first responder in accordance with Article 7, Section 21. (O) of the Constitution of the State of Louisiana.

Body

WHEREAS,                     on November 18, 2023, the voters of the State of Louisiana approved Constitutional Amendment No. 3, as provided for in Act 179 of the 2023 Regular Session of the Louisiana State Legislature, by a vote of 338,823 YES to 300,477 NO, with the voters of St. Charles Parish approving said Amendment No. 3 by a vote of 3,944 YES to 2,812 NO; and,

WHEREAS,                     said Constitutional Amendment No. 3 provided that a parish governing authority may approve an ad valorem tax exemption of up to two thousand five hundred dollars of the assessed valuation of property receiving the homestead exemption that is owned and occupied by a qualified first responder; and,

WHEREAS,                     it is the desire of the Parish Council to approve said additional homestead exemption in the amount of two thousand five hundred dollars of assessed valuation.

THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL HEREBY ORDAINS:

SECTION I.                     That in accordance with Article 7, Section 21. (O) (3) of the Constitution of the State of Louisiana there is hereby approved an additional ad valorem tax exemption of two thousand five hundred dollars of the assessed valuation of property receiving the homestead exemption that is owned and occupied by a qualitied first responder as defined therein.

SECTION II.                     That in accordance with Act 179 of the 2023 Regular Session of the Louisiana State Legislature, said additional ad valorem tax exemption established herein shall become effective January 1, 2024 and shall apply to ad valorem taxes due beginning in tax year 2024 and thereafter.

The foregoing ordinance having been submitted to a vote, the vote thereon was as follows:
