Proclamation: "Walk 4 Recovery Day"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, Action Against Addiction is a non-profit group dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse and its devastating impact on the individual and community; and,
WHEREAS, Action Against Addiction's mission is to prevent underage drinking, substance abuse, and illegal substance use, through prevention strategies that educate, inspire, and shape public policy; and,
WHEREAS, the disease of addiction affects us all, hijacking lives, exploiting families, and stealing the soul of our society; and,
WHEREAS, addiction is the leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds, and is responsible for 50% of all deaths on Louisiana highways; and,
WHEREAS, addiction is the driving force behind most violent crimes and is paralyzing the economic growth of our community; and,
WHEREAS, already firmly entrenched, this disease has widened its reach to include prescription drug abuse which the Center of Disease Control has labeled a "national epidemic"; and,
WHEREAS, Action Against Addiction is helping to raise awareness of critical prevention services, treatment options, and recovery efforts in the metropolitan New Orleans area; and,
WHEREAS, Action Against Addiction delivers evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs to several thousand public and private school students, parents, and community groups; and,
WHEREAS, recovery at the individual, family, and community level is not only possible, it is probable if we join hands to build a healthy, safe, and productive future for all of our families.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 AS
"WALK 4 RECOVERY DAY"
AND URGE ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO JOIN ACTION AGAINST ADDICTION AT THE NEW CITY PARK REUNION SHELTER & FESTIVAL GROUNDS IN NEW ORLEANS FOR THEIR 3RD ANNUAL WALK 4 RECOVERY EVENT ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2014, AT 8:00 AM TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR PREVENTION AND RECOVERY OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE.
