Proclamation: "Heart of the Americas"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, "Heart of the Americas" is a non-profit organization based in New Orleans which is dedicated to providing free heart-related medical care to indigent patients in Latin America; and,
WHEREAS, "Heart of the Americas" was created to provide advanced cardiovascular treatment to countries that are currently lacking any type of complex heart surgery; and,
WHEREAS, "Heart of the Americas" medical mission is to complete heart diagnostic studies, pacemaker placement and perform percutaneous invasive procedures; perform open-heart surgery in young-adults and adult patients; foster educational exchange of Nicaraguan cardiologist, surgeons, nurses and technicians to further their knowledge of cardiac patient care; satisfy the medical needs of low-income cardiac patients; and to provide Dr. Roberto Calderon Gutierrez Hospital with an international contact which will facilitate the educational exchange and technical support; and,
WHEREAS, the ultimate goal of "Heart of the Americas" is to equip the hospital and train the medical personnel, so that in the future, they can do these types of operations and make this type of medical treatment rarely available to all the citizens of Nicaragua; and,
WHEREAS, "Heart of the Americas" supplies all necessary medicine, medical supplies, and equipment, all which is donated, therefore, all operations are free of charge to all patients and at no cost to the hospital or government; and,
WHEREAS, In three prior Missions to Nicaragua, 35 open-heart surgeries, 112 percutaneous procedures including coronary angioplasty and stent placement have been performed which account for a monetary donation to the country of approximately 7.8 million dollars; and,
WHEREAS, all expenses of the medical missions and all it entails are funded by "Heart of the Americas"; and,
WHEREAS, "Heart of the Americas" will be hosting a charity Golf Tournament on September 22, 2001, at Fashion Golf and Country Club in Hahnville in order to help fund these Missions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY proclaim September 22, 2001 as
"HEART OF THE AMERICAS DAY"
in St. Charles Parish.
