Proclamation: Older Americans Month

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish is home to more than 6,000 residents aged 60 years or older; and,
WHEREAS, the older Americans of St. Charles Parish are a vital part of our Parish's civic and cultural life; and,
WHEREAS, older adults are members of our Parish entitled to dignified, independent lives free from fears, stereotypes, and misconceptions about aging; and,
WHEREAS, each community in our Parish must strive to recognize the contributions of our older citizens, understand and address their evolving needs, and support their caregivers; and,
WHEREAS, the quality of life in St. Charles Parish is dependent upon intergenerational understanding, cooperation, and support, so that all of us may benefit from our collective efforts to serve our elders and the people who love them; and,
WHEREAS, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Older Americans Act by the United States Congress; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish recognizes the dedication and efforts of the St. Charles Council On Aging, the Parish's primary provider of programs and services to meet the needs of our senior adults.
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF MAY, 2005, AS
"OLDER AMERICANS MONTH"
IN THE PARISH OF ST. CHARLES, AND URGE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR COMMUNITIES TO RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF OLDER AMERICANS.
