Proclamation:  Our Lady Of The Holy Rosary Day In St. Charles Parish

Body

2002-0474

                     P R O C L A M A T I O N

WHEREAS,                     on 2 December 1877 the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was instituted with the erection of a small Chapel in Taft; and,

WHEREAS,                     the Church Parish, at its dedication, included the entire West Bank of St. Charles Parish, including Killona, Hahnville, Luling, Ama, Boutte, Bayou Gauche, Paradis, and Des Allemands; and,

WHEREAS,                     the original Church suffered the ravages of the Mississippi River as it ate away at the land, requiring that it be moved at least three times, but never damaging the spiritual determination of the congregation; and,

WHEREAS,                     in 1949 the Church dedicated its first building at its current site in Hahnville, a new Community Center, which was joined by the current Church and Rectory in 1964, however in 1965 Hurricane Betsy roared through the Parish causing severe damage to the Church and Rectory and completely demolishing the Community Center; and,

WHEREAS,                     with a continued spiritual drive to rebuild on November 24, 1969 the Church, Rectory, and a new Community Center were dedicated by The Most Reverend Philip M. Hannan, Archbishop of New Orleans; and,

WHEREAS,                     for 125 years the Parishioners of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary have stood united against many odds, the Great Depression, World War II, Hurricane Betsy - yet generation after generation of parishioners have been inspired by the Pastors who have lead with dedication through their own sacrifices; and,

WHEREAS,                     no truer words can be found today than were written on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Church…one hundred years of joy and sorrow, of struggle and triumph, shared by Priests whose service have spanned those years, and people who have from generation to generation kept alive the words of the psalmist,

“The Lord's dwelling is well founded on a firm rock”

The People and Priests of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church are a firm rock, indeed.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT WE THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT DO HEREBY PROCLAIM NOVEMBER 30, 2002 AS

OUR LADY OF THE HOLY ROSARY

DAY IN ST.CHARLES PARISH

ON THIS, ITS 125TH ANNIVERSARY AND URGE ALL CITIZENS TO REFLECT ON THE MANY SPIRITUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF ITS PARISHIONERS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE CIVIL PARISH OF ST. CHARLES, and
