Proclamation: Older Americans Month

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, throughout its history, our Parish has benefited from the many contributions of its Older Americans and our democracy owes its success in great part to the millions of senior citizens who through their work, volunteer efforts and their devotion to their families and communities have helped build the foundation of this state; and,
WHEREAS, each year, this Parish reserves the month of May to pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Older Americans and to reaffirm our commitment to preserving and enhancing their quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, Older Americans Month was established in 1963, when only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday and about one-third of older Americans lived in poverty with few programs to meet their needs; and,
WHEREAS, close to 33 million older Americans now live in a society which can better address their needs with programs such as "Social Security" and laws such as the "Older Americans Act"; and,
WHEREAS, by the year 2030, it is expected that this population group will exceed 70 million, more than double the present number; and,
WHEREAS, the theme for this month, the 35th Anniversary of Older Americans Act, "In the New CenturyÂ…The Future is Aging"; and,
WHEREAS, together, we can create a future for older Americans which acknowledges their past contributions and enables their continuing involvement; and,
WHEREAS, we can create a future in which long life is treasured for all the possibilities it presents and for the opportunity to draw without hesitation upon the experienced-based wisdom of individuals who happen to be older.
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF MAY, 2000, AS
"OLDER AMERICANS MONTH"
IN THE PARISH OF ST. CHARLES, AND URGE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR COMMUNITIES TO RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF OLDER AMERICANS.
