Proclamation: “Vehicular Heatstroke Awareness Month”

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, according to the National Safety Council and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the number of child hot car deaths for 2023 was 29. On average, 37 children under the age of 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle. Heatstroke is the leading cause of death in vehicles for those 14 and younger excluding crashes; and,
WHEREAS, it is hard to overstate the toll this takes on families, but together we can help put an end to this tragedy by taking some important steps; and,
WHEREAS, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is launching a new campaign to prevent hot car deaths, “Stop. Look. Lock.” to educate and empower parents and caregivers to make simple changes to prevent unimaginable tragedies; and,
WHEREAS, vehicles can heat up very quickly, with temperatures rising 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes, creating a deadly situation for anyone locked inside; and,
WHEREAS, no one wants to think they could forget their child, or loved one, but the facts show it can happen to anyone; and,
WHEREAS, by locking the vehicle door when it is not in use, can prevent children from gaining access to the vehicle and minimize the risk of them getting trapped; never leaving a child alone in a vehicle, even rolling down a window does little to keep a vehicle cool. Some newer vehicles come with a back seat reminder that will allow parents to check their vehicle before they leave; and if you see a child in distress in a vehicle, call 911 immediately and get help; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish encourages all parents, family members, and caregivers, to work together with agencies by promoting the “Stop. Look. Lock.” prevention and awareness program, and to relay the information obtained to friends and coworkers through social media.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, WE THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM AUGUST 2024 AS
“VEHICULAR HEATSTROKE AWARENESS MONTH”
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH AND URGE ALL CITIZENS TO HELP PREVENT THE TRAGIC LOSS OF LIFE, OF KIDS AND PETS BEING LEFT IN UNATTENDED CARS.
