Proclamation: "Drive 4 Pledges Day"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the texting and driving "It Can Wait" movement focuses on educating people, especially teens, about the dangers of texting and driving; and,
WHEREAS, the message is simple, yet vital; when it comes to texting and driving, "It Can Wait"; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish and all cellular phone companies hold the health and safety of its teenagers and adults as a chief concern; and,
WHEREAS, through ItCanWait.com, Facebook, text-to-pledge, tweet-to-pledge, and events, more than 2 million people have pledged to never text and drive; and,
WHEREAS, each pledge made is a symbol of commitment being part of a movement that helps everyone make safe choices with their wireless devices while on the road; and,
WHEREAS, 98 percent of American commuters know sending a text or e-mail while driving is not safe and nearly 50 percent of commuters text while behind the wheel; and,
WHEREAS, more than 40 percent of commuters who text while driving reported the activity as being a habit; and,
WHEREAS, a driver that sends a text message or e-mail while driving not only jeopardizes his or her safety, but also the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers; and,
WHEREAS, no message is so urgent that it is worth diverting attention from the road and risking lives in the process. "It Can Wait".
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014, AS
"DRIVE 4 PLEDGES DAY"
