IN RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Occidental Chemical Petroleum Corporation, OxyChem as it is known, will celebrate 50 years of operation in St. Charles Parish on April 10, 2016; and,
WHEREAS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental Pertoleum Corporation, OxyChem's initial startup in Taft occurred April 10, 1966, and 50 years later it continues to be a successful business and a key business partner to the Taft community, St. Charles Parish, and the great State of Louisiana; and,
WHEREAS, the OxyChem Taft plant produces chlorine, caustic soda, and caustic potash - essential building blocks for life-enhancing products, including safe drinking water, wastewater treatment, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, soaps and detergents, and pulp and paper; and,
WHEREAS, the Taft plant along with OxyChem's production facilities in Luling, Convent, and Geismar employ more than 850 employees and contribute to Louisiana's economy in the form of state and local taxes, as well as through local purchases; and,
WHEREAS, OxyChem is an active participant in the American Chemistry Council's (ACC) Responsible Care(r) initiative, and in 2015, they were named Responsible Care(r) Company of the Year, in recognition of the company's outstanding achievement and leadership in environmental, health, safety, and security performance. This was the fifth time they earned ACC's most prestigious Responsible Care(r) award; and,
WHEREAS, the Taft plant also is one of three of OxyChem's Louisiana plants having achieved Star Status under OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program as among the safest work sites in the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, do hereby offer this recognition and tribute to
