Title
Proclamation: "National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week"
Body
P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, "huffing", or inhaling volatile substances, can kill the very first time a person experiments with it; and,
WHEREAS, when "huffing" doesn't kill quickly, it damages the body each time - especially the brain; and,
WHEREAS, "huffing" peaks between the ages of 12 and 15 years, but often starts innocently in children only 6 to 8 years old; and,
WHEREAS, treating inhalant abuse is very difficult and withdrawal symptoms may last for weeks; and,
WHEREAS, talking with your child is a powerful and important prevention strategy because preventing "huffing" is far better than trying to treat an inhalant addiction; and,
WHEREAS, an alert parent is the family's best drug abuse prevention tool.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY JOIN WITH THE BAYOU COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ABUSE, A UNITED WAY AGENCY, AND THE LAFOURCHE PREVENTION PARTNERSHIP TO PROCLAIM MARCH 19-25, 2006 AS
"NATIONAL INHALANTS AND POISONS AWARENESS WEEK"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH AND CALL UPON ALL CITIZENS, PARENTS, BUSINESSES, HOSPITALS, AND SCHOOLS IN ST. CHARLES PARISH TO REMAIN AWARE THAT THE DANGER OF INHALANT ABUSE IS LITERALLY RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES.
