Title
A resolution to officially designate the area on River Road between Destrehan Plantation and Bustard's Cove at Van's Lane in New Sarpy as the “Mile of History.”
Body
WHEREAS, the 250 th Anniversary Celebration Committee of St. Charles Borromeo in 1973 designated the area on the East Bank of St. Charles Parish between L'Anse Aux Outardes (Bustard's Cove) at Van's Lane in New Sarpy and Destrehan Manor House as the "Mile of History"; and,
WHEREAS, to this day symbols remain there as relics of our rich heritage of the Eighteenth Century; and,
WHEREAS, in 1719 and 1722, immigrants from Germany, Switzerland and Alsace Lorraine settled this area as colonists with land grants and concessions provided by John Law's Company of the Indies; and,
WHEREAS, one of the Articles of the Company's Charter provided for the building of churches and designating priests of the Catholic faith to serve the spiritual ministry among the inhabitants; and,
WHEREAS, in these circumstances 267 years ago (in 1740), the ecclesiastical Parish of St. Charles Borromeo, the "Little Red Church", began its history and service to the original settlers and their descendants; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Borromeo cemetery was established at the same time and is recognized as the South's oldest German cemetery; and,
WHEREAS, L'Anse Aux Outardes (Bustard's Cove) in New Sarpy was settled by the Germans and French in 1722; and,
WHEREAS, Bienville, Iberville and Tonti all met at this spot in 1699 where the Mississippi River's tributary was a direct route to Lake Pontchartrain; and,
WHEREAS, Antoine Robert de Logny purchased 20 arpents in 1782 and in 1787 constructed his house which would later be acquired by his son-in-law Jean Noel Destrehan; and,
