Proclamation: "Treat Me Right Day"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the crime of teen dating violence, including physical, emotional and sexual assault, and harassment via text messaging, email, or instant messaging is a reality for many American teenagers; and,
WHEREAS, like drug abuse, teen dating violence is a reality of which many parents are unaware; and,
WHEREAS, one in three female teens in a dating relationship report having feared for their safety and thirty percent (30%) of teens both male and female have been harassed via text-messaging; one in five teens in a serious relationship report having been hit, slapped, or pushed by a partner; and one in four girls in a relationship report having been pressured to go further sexually than they really wanted; and,
WHEREAS, in 2004, the Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Initiative was started by teens through the American Bar Association and now is supported by dozens of National, State, and Local Agencies and Organizations; and,
WHEREAS, the call to end teen dating violence was formally recognized in 2006 and 2007 when both Houses of Congress declared the first week in February as "National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week"; and,
WHEREAS, it is fitting to set aside a special time to bring this issue to the attention of all citizens so they can become better informed and involved in programs to eliminate this epidemic from our society; and,
WHEREAS, the United Way of St. Charles will host a Concert of Awareness for Teen Dating Violence on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling from 4pm - 8pm; all ages are welcome; and,
WHEREAS, the Parish President and the Members of the Parish Council wish to join in and lend their support for this most worthy cause.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 2008 AS
