Proclamation: Fire Prevention Week in St. Charles Parish

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the Fire Prevention Week 2007 theme, "Practice Your Escape Plan" is an important message for all citizens; and,
WHEREAS, it is important that the community reflect on the seriousness of Fire Prevention Week; and,
WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week commemorates the great Chicago Fire of 1871 which killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres; and,
WHEREAS, a fire can spread rapidly and a quick escape from the home increases the chance of survival; and,
WHEREAS, it's not enough to have a home fire escape plan; to escape safely, you've got to make sure that everyone in the home has practiced the plan; and,
WHEREAS, according to a National Fire Protection Association survey, only one in four Americans have devised and practiced a plan to escape from the home during a fire; and,
WHEREAS, during Fire Prevention Week emphasis is placed on raising the public's awareness of fire prevention and safety with a special focus this year on the importance of having an escape plan and practicing the plan at least twice a year; and,
WHEREAS, the local efforts of the fire service are supported by the activities of organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Congressional Fire Services Institute, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and its United States Fire Administration, the International Fire Marshals Association, the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Association of State Fire Marshals, the National Fire Protection Association, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and the Louisiana State Fire Chiefs Association.
