IN RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Ms. Tawanda Coleman Thomas is a native of St. Rose, Louisiana, the daughter of Freddie and Ernestine V. Coleman; and,
WHEREAS, Tawanda C. Thomas is married to David D. Thomas, they have two children, Brianna Elise and Brandon Darrell, they currently reside in Boutte, Louisiana; and,
WHEREAS, Tawanda C. Thomas graduated in 1996 from Destrehan High School; and,
WHEREAS, Tawanda C. Thomas received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1990 from the University of New Orleans and she is a 1994 graduate of Loyola University of New Orleans School of Law where she received her Juris Doctorate; and,
WHEREAS, Tawanda C. Thomas became the first African American Judicial Law Clerk in St. Charles Parish, clerking for then Chief Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon; and,
WHEREAS, after passing the Bar Exam, Tawanda C. Thomas was appointed in 1995 by Harry J. Morel, Jr., as the first African American and first female Assistant District Attorney for the 29th Judicial District, and currently is the Attorney for the Juvenile and Child Support Divisions of the St. Charles Parish District Attorney's Office; and,
WHEREAS, Tawanda C. Thomas is the Chairperson of FINS (Families In Need of Services), a Member of the Louisiana District Attorney's Association, the National District Attorney's Association, the Louisiana Bar Association, the Louis Westerfield Society, Inc., and a Board Member of St. Charles Parish Community Action Advisory Committee; and,
WHEREAS, Tawanda C. Thomas is currently a Member of the Mount Airy Baptist Church in Boutte, where she serves as Director of the Young Adult and Sunbeam Choirs. She has previously served as Director of the Fifth African Baptist Church of St. Rose's Youth Choir for 16 years and organist for the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Hahnville for 12 years.
