Proclamation: "National Drunk And Drugged Driving Prevention Month"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone on the average of every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every 2 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); and,
WHEREAS, more than half of passengers 14 and younger who die in alcohol-related crashes are riding with drinking drivers; and,
WHEREAS, alcohol-related crashes in the United States cost about $51 billion each year; and,
WHEREAS, every person has a responsibility to drive free of alcohol and drugs and to insist that friends and family do the same; and,
WHEREAS, the protection of all citizens from impaired drivers is a priority of all law enforcement agencies.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY JOIN WITH THE BAYOU COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ABUSE, A UNITED WAY AGENCY; THE LAFOURCHE PREVENTION PARTNERSHIP, AND THOUSANDS OF AGENCIES AND COMMUNITIES ACROSS AMERICA, TO PROCLAIM DECEMBER 2008 AS:
"NATIONAL DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH, AND URGE ALL COMMUNITY, HEALTH, GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS, AND BUSINESSES TO JOIN WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO DEMONSTRATE THAT IMPAIRED DRIVING IS UNACCEPTABLE AND ILLEGAL.
