Proclamation: Older Americans Month
Body

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, a new chapter in the history of humankind begins, and older Americans constitute a growing and vital segment of the American population. An unimaginable number of people are growing to an advanced age. As a Parish, we come together to honor the contributions of older persons; and,
WHEREAS, each year, this Parish reserves the month of May to pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Older Americans and to reaffirm our commitment to preserving and enhancing their quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, Older Americans Month was established in 1963, when only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. Today, individuals 65 years of age and older represent 12.7 percent of the U.S. population, a nation which provides programs and laws such as the “Older Americans Act” to ensure that the dignity of older people is maintained; and,
WHEREAS, by the year 2030, one in four Americans will be 65 or older, more than 88 million; and,
WHEREAS, in recognition of aging as a “global” issue and of our own nation's rapidly increasing multi-cultural and multi-generational aging population, the theme for this year's Older American Month 2004 is “Aging Well, Living Well.”
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF MAY, 2004, AS
"OLDER AMERICANS MONTH"
IN THE PARISH OF ST. CHARLES, AND URGE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR COMMUNITIES TO RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF OLDER AMERICANS.
