RESOLUTION NO. 5385
Title
A resolution to request that a Memorial Marker to the 1976 Luling/Destrehan Ferry Accident be placed in St. Charles Parish.
Body
WHEREAS, on October 20, 1976 the ferryboat George Prince collided with the Norwegian tanker ship Frosta, while crossing the Mississippi River from Destrehan to Luling; and,
WHEREAS, of the ninety-five people aboard the George Prince, seventy-seven lost their lives; and,
WHEREAS, this accident was the worst ferry disaster in United States history; and,
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Parish Council and the Parish President to erect a Memorial Marker to honor those who lost their lives aboard the George Prince; and,
WHEREAS, the Parish, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has proposed the construction of a Trailhead/Scenic Overlook along the West Bank Bicycle/Pedestrian Path at the Hale Boggs Bridge in Luling and on the East Bank near the Bridge Park; and,
WHEREAS, said Overlook of the Mississippi River would be an appropriate and fitting location for said Memorial Marker.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, do hereby request that a Memorial Marker in honor of the victims of the October 20, 1976 Luling/Destrehan Ferry Accident between the George Prince and the Frosta be erected on the Trailhead/Scenic Overlook at the Hale Boggs Bridge in Luling, upon its construction and on the East Bank near the Bridge Park.
