IN RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Mr. Dean Church and his wife Sally are long-time residents of Luling, Louisiana in St. Charles Parish and they are the proud parents of Dean, Jr., David, and Anne Graffagnini and the proud grandparents of Andrew and Peter Church, and Mark, Matthew, and Miles Graffagnini; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Church, originally from Kentucky, was recruited to play basketball at the then named University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) in 1957; now named University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL); and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Church, was the school's first basketball All-American and became the first player in program history to receive an All-American honor twice; and,
WHEREAS, by the time his career was over, Mr. Church held single-season records for most points, points per game, field goals scored, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, most games in double figures, and 30-plus point games; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Church was named the Gulf States Conference Player of the Year in 1964 and 1965 and today he ranks 12th on the school's all-time scoring list. He helped lead his squad to the NAIA District 27 Tournament Title in 1964 which earned the team an invitation to the National Tournament; and,
WHEREAS, after his college career ended, Mr. Church was a 10th round pick by Philadelphia in the 1965 draft and in 1981, he was inducted into the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame; and,
WHEREAS, on February 25, 2012, Mr. Church's No. 12 jersey was retired by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; he is only the fourth basketball player in the history of the University to have his jersey retired.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, do hereby offer this tribute and recognition to
DEAN CHURCH
