Proclamation: "Fire Prevention Week"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our parish; and,
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and,
WHEREAS, the 2024 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Smoke alarms: make them work for you!" effectively strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home; and,
WHEREAS, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than 54%. Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms; and,
WHEREAS, smoke alarms serve as the first line of defense in a home fire, but they need to be working in order to protect people and with this years campaign, helps better educate the public about simple but critical steps they can take to make sure their homes have smoke alarms in all the needed locations and that they are working properly; and,
WHEREAS, this year's Fire Prevention Week theme, "Smoke alarms: make them work for you!" can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely and is a great way to remind everyone about these messages and to act on them.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, WE THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM OCTOBER 6 - 12, 2024, AS
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH AND URGE ALL CITIZENS TO INSTALL, TEST ONCE A MONTH, AND REPLACE ALL SMOKE ALARMS WITHIN 10 YEARS DURING FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2024 AND TO SUPPORT THE MANY PUBLIC SAFETY ACTIVITIES AND EFFORTS OF ST. CHARLES PARISH'S FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES.
