IN RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Dr. A. Shameem Choudhury is a resident of St. Charles Parish residing in Destrehan, Louisiana with his wife Dr. Brenda Bryant and their son Alex; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Choudhury was born in a region of undivided British India that is now called Bangladesh. He attended Sylhet Government College and Dhaka University majoring in English Literature in a program modeled on honors programs in English in British Universities; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Choudhury did his graduate work in English at Tulane University in New Orleans and at the University of Western Ontario in Canada; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Choudhury received his Ph.D. in English from Tulane University in 1977 and has taught at Delgado Community College since 1975; member of the Louisiana State Poetry Society since 1974, and served as Advisory Editor of the New Laurel Review since 1977; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Choudhury wrote the poem “To The American Eagle” in 1978 after he received his American Citizenship. The poem was read at a program held at Delgado on September 11, 2002, titled “America Remembers” and earlier this year the poem was circulated throughout the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate; and,
WHEREAS, after reading his poem on September 11, 2002, Dr. Choudhury remarked “I felt uplifted beyond all expectations. As an immigrant Bangladesh American who loved the freedom and the opportunity for self-realization this country offers, and who sought to be part of the nation, I could not have asked for a greater honor.”
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, do hereby offer this tribute and recognition to
