Title
A resolution in support of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program and its efforts to implement its Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and to ensure that any fiscal year 2001 general fund cuts to the BTNEP budget are not disproportionate to those made to other state programs.
Body
WHEREAS, the 4.2 million-acre Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary is one of the 28 nationally significant estuaries of the National Estuary Program; and,
WHEREAS, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) convened a Management Conference in 1991 consisting of hundreds of citizens, industry, agricultural, fisheries, government, and university representatives sharing the common goal of restoring and preserving this national treasure; and,
WHEREAS, beginning in 1991 the BTNEP developed a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) over a 5 year period to address the serious environmental, economic, and loss of cultural heritage issues which impact this region; and,
WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish government has been an integral part of the BTNEP Management Conference and have actively participated in, and supported the development of this award winning plan through Resolution Number 4245 passed unanimously on March 18, 1996; and,
WHEREAS, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program is in the process of actively implementing the 51 Actions contained in the CCMP; and,
WHEREAS, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuaries are disappearing faster than any other land mass in the world, threatening the sustainability of our communities and industrial infrastructure; and,
WHEREAS, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program has enormous public and private support and is one of a limited number of forums that offers St. Charles Parish citizens through its duly elected Parish Council the opportunity for input on an equal basis into coastal restorat...
