Title
Proclamation: "Suicide Prevention Awareness Month"
Body
P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time when millions of people around the world join their voices to raise awareness of suicide preventions, treatment, and recovery; and,
WHEREAS, suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. Suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition; and,
WHEREAS, the 2023 theme for this month of awareness and recognition is "Creating Hope Through Action", a campaign which encourages people to work with our family, friends, healthcare workers, religious, and political leaders to prevent suicide through active counseling and support; and,
WHEREAS, after years of advocacy and preparation, 988 is now available nationwide as the new number to contact for mental health, substance use, and suicide crisis; a simple, easy-to-remember way for people to get help. This new number will allow people to quickly connect with support during a crisis 24/7 no matter where they live; and,
WHEREAS, while suicide prevention is important to address year-round, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month provides a dedicated time to come together with collective passion and strength to address a difficult topic; and,
WHEREAS, we can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide because just one conversation can change a life.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, WE THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 2023 AS
"SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH AND CALL UPON ALL CITIZENS, COMMUNITY AGENCIES, FAITH GROUPS, AND BUSINESSES TO COORDINATE COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EVIDENCE-BASED SUICIDE PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION STRATEGIES.
