IN RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Lista Benarby Guilfore was born Lista Latitia Benarby on November 7, 1908. She is the first child of the late Olevia Johnson Benarby and Varise Benarby, born and raised in Ama, Louisiana; and,
WHEREAS, Lista, confessed religion at the age of 18 and remembers being told "Your Sins Are Forgiven And Your Soul Is Set Free", and was baptized in the Mississippi River, the first Sunday in September, 1927 by the late Reverend William Stephens; and,
WHEREAS, Lista, after her Mother's death and upon completion of the 6th grade, reared her siblings: Evelyn Benarby and the late Helen, Weldon, Earl, Wilma, and Hilda Benarby; and,
WHEREAS, Lista married the late Purnell Clark on June 6, 1929 and they were blessed with four children: Doris Clark Williams, the late Gloria, Malcolm, Sr., and Earl Clark. Her second marriage to Ernest Patterson, Sr. was also blessed with children: Beverly Byrd and Ernest, Jr. She later married Sullivan Guilfore on July 21, 1973 and is the proud stepmother of four children: Sullivan Jr., Jean Washington, and the late Dorothy Rome and Richard Guilfore; and,
WHEREAS, Lista attends Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was President of the Senior Choir for 24 years and sang in the United Choir for 44 years. Presently, Mother of the Church and a Deaconess since 1977, she loves attending church and is extremely proud of the fact that in a church play she played Mrs. Rosa Parks; and,
WHEREAS, Lista worked as a cook for Cyanamid, Dr. David Vial, St. Charles Hospital, and Luling Elementary School, also as a Nurse's Aide for Dr. David Vial. After retiring at the young age of 68, she volunteered as one of the first Pink Ladies (Candy Stripers) at St. Charles Hospital; and,
WHEREAS, Lista will celebrate her 102nd birthday on November 7, 2010 with family and friends.
