IN RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Irene Marguerite Hebert was born the ninth child of thirteen in Labadieville, Louisiana, in Assumption Parish on November 12, 1914, to Arcema Philip Hebert and Zolema Marie Boudreaux; and,
WHEREAS, in 1929, Irene's family moved to Norco where her father opened the first grocery store and meat market in the area called Hebert's Meat Market; it was located in front of their newly built family home and supplied services to residents of Norco and to employees of the newly built Norco-New Orleans Refinery Company now known as Shell Oil. Her family home on Apple Street is among the oldest homes in the area; and,
WHEREAS, Irene attended schools in Labadieville and Patterson and graduated as the Valedictorian of Destrehan High School in 1931. She worked at her father's meat market along with her brothers until a payroll clerk position with the St. Charles Parish became available. Her father would drive her to the Destrehan ferry, where she and other employees would walk onto the ferry and travel across the river to the Westbank landing, where a parish car would retrieve them and bring them to Hahnville. In the evening after work, the parish car would bring the employees back to the ferry, they would cross the river, and her father would pick her up; and,
WHEREAS, as time went on, Irene went to work at Wesco in payroll, then when Shell Oil took over the Norco Refinery, she was offered a job with them where she retired after 38 years; and,
WHEREAS, Irene helped out St. Charles Borromeo Church in Destrehan until Sacred Heart Parish in Norco was created where she was the first secretary for the parish; and,
WHEREAS, Irene's memories are many, her family large, her joys great. She is still fairly independent, religious, and private.
