Proclamation: "Fire Prevention Week"

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our Parish; and,
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and,
WHEREAS, working smoke alarms cut the risk of people dying in reported home fires in half and three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms, usually because batteries were missing, disconnected, or dead; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish residents should install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home and residents who are hearing impaired or deaf should install smoke alarms and alert devices that meet their needs; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and,
WHEREAS, the 2016 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Don't Wait - Check the Date!" effectively serves to educate the public about the vital importance of replacing the smoke alarms in their homes at least every ten years, and to determine the age of their smoke alarms by checking the date of manufacture on the back of the alarms.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM OCTOBER 9-15, 2016, AS
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK"
IN ST. CHARLES PARISH AND URGE ALL CITIZENS TO CHECK THE DATE OF THEIR SMOKE ALARMS IN THEIR HOMES, REPLACE THEM IF IT IS MORE THAN TEN YEARS OLD, AND TO SUPPORT THE MANY PUBLIC SAFETY ACTIVITIES AND EFFORTS OF ST. CHARLES PARISH'S FIRE AND EM...
