IN RECOGNITION

WHEREAS, the town of Norco was founded in 1934 by the Post Office, on land once part of the Good Hope Plantation and called "Sellers," after landowner "Colonel" Thomas Sellers; and,

WHEREAS, the community's industrial history began when the New Orleans Refining Company established a marine petroleum supply terminal and later a refinery on the land; and,

WHEREAS, in 1925, the company's acronym, NORCO, was adopted as the town's new name, and Shell took over the facility, deepening the industry-community relationship that continues to define Norco today; and,

WHEREAS, construction of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, a 7,000 foot-wide control system began in 1929 and was completed in 1932, with President Franklin Roosevelt attending the dedication; and,

WHEREAS, Airline Highway, originally a two-lane highway, now designated as U.S. Highway 61, was authorized by then Governor Huey P. Long in the 1930's as an alternate to River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge; and,

WHEREAS, in 1997, the Norco Civic Association (NCA) organization was formed to provide the people of Norco a unified voice to address concerns of the community, focusing on improving the town, parish, state, and nation for the quality of life for the people; and,

WHEREAS, Sal Digirolamo, Ronald St. Pierre, Gerald Songy, Alex H. Livingston, A.J. "Buddy" Chauvin, Nick Digirolamo, Lynn "Tony" Louviere, Sr., J.P. "Paul" Mire, and Fru Waguespack made up the first NCA officers and Board of Directors; and,

WHEREAS, the town of Norco will be celebrating its 100-Year Anniversary with a celebration on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Norco Town Square, with vendors, free food, free drinks, free snowballs and pony rides. It is more than just a celebration-it's a chance to reflect on the past, embrace the present, and look forward to the future of Norco's tight-knit community.
