Title
A resolution requesting the Louisiana Legislature to recognize the Bi-Centennial of the nineteen original parishes created by Act 1 of 1807.
Body
WHEREAS, prior to 1807, St. Charles Parish was known as the County of the German Coast of the Territory of Orleans; and,
WHEREAS, in 1807, the elected legislative council divided the Territory of Orleans into nineteen parishes; and,
WHEREAS, St. Charles Parish was one of the original nineteen parishes created from the Territory of Orleans; and,
WHEREAS, on April 8, 1812, the Congress of the United States approved the admittance of the State of Louisiana into the Union; and,
WHEREAS, in 2007, St. Charles Parish and the other original eighteen parishes of the Territory of Orleans will celebrate their 200th birthday; and,
WHEREAS, Resolution Number 5210 of the St. Charles Parish Council established the St. Charles Parish Bi-Centennial Committee to begin the planning process to commemorate this historic occasion; and,
WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish Council believes it is imperative that the State of Louisiana recognize the significance of the 200th anniversary of the original nineteen parishes.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL do hereby request that the Louisiana Legislature recognize the 200th anniversary of the creation of the original nineteen parishes from the Territory of Orleans.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be sent to Governor Kathleen Blanco, Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu, U.S. Senator David Vitter, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, U.S. Representative Charlie Melancon, U.S. Representative Bobby Jindal, State Senator Joel T. Chaisson, II, State Representative Gary L. Smith, Jr., and State Representative Ernest D. Wooton.
