Title
A resolution, reaffirming the Parish of St. Charles' confidence in and support of the Pontchartrain Levee District and the continued construction of the Lake Pontchartrain, LA and Vicinity Hurricane Protection Project in St. Charles Parish, along with the continued investigation and study of additional flood control measures including the St. Charles Urban Flood Control Project.
Body
WHEREAS, the Parish of St. Charles has a fundamental interest in protecting its residents, businesses and their property from flooding caused by hurricanes and tropical storms; and,
WHEREAS, the Parish of St. Charles has partnered with the Pontchartrain Levee District and supports its work to provide critical hurricane protection for the residents and businesses on the east bank of St. Charles Parish between Airline Highway and the Mississippi River and said Parish will continue in its partnership and in support of the Pontchartrain Levee District with regard to this project and its continued investigation of additional flood control projects; and,
WHEREAS, due to the catastrophic events following Hurricane Katrina and the urgency in providing immediate and greater levels of flood protection to the citizens of St. Charles Parish, there are a number of legislative members that are of the opinion that this immediate and critical level of protection can be more readily achieved through the consolidated New Orleans area levee board and we discourage the inclusion of the Pontchartrain Levee District in such a consolidation as it would have a detrimental and adverse effect upon flood control that is critical to the protection of the citizens, homes and businesses in our community.
