Title
A resolution requesting that the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers finalize its decision on the alignment of the Donaldsonville, Louisiana to the Gulf of Mexico Hurricane Protection Levee by January 2011 as pledged.
Body
WHEREAS, the Residents of the West Bank of St. Charles Parish are vulnerable to the intrusion of flood waters caused by hurricanes; and,
WHEREAS, the Residents of the West Bank of St. Charles Parish who live west of the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion Guide Levee are concerned that the nearby West Bank & Vicinity New Orleans, Louisiana Hurricane Protection Project will increase their chances of flooding during a tropical storm event; and,
WHEREAS, the citizens of St. Charles Parish have anxiously awaited this Project for many years; and,
WHEREAS, the effects and damage caused by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav on the coast of Louisiana was an eye opener revealing the possible devastation that the Residents of St. Charles Parish are susceptible to in the event of either a direct or indirect hit to the area; and,
WHEREAS, in anticipation of receiving the proper permits to begin work on the St. Charles Parish West Bank Hurricane Protection Levee Project, it is essential that an alignment decision impacting the area in St. Charles Parish be made soon on the Donaldsonville Project; and,
WHEREAS, it is essential that we move forward with levee protection for our residents that will be Corps approved and FEMA recognized.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL, do hereby request that the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers finalize its decision on the alignment of the Donaldsonville Hurricane Protection Levee by January 2011 as pledged.
