RESOLUTION NO. 5938
Title
A resolution imploring that the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters fund, install on new hurricane proof foundations and maintain an accurate system of real time gauges and storm surge measurement devices in Lake Pontchartrain Basin, Lake Maurepas Basin, Barataria Bay, Lake Salvador, and Mud Lake.

WHEREAS, Hurricane Isaac brought forth and reinforced the need for accurate data with respect to tidal flows and storm surge in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin, Lake Maurepas Basin, Barataria Bay, Lake Salvador, and Mud Lake; and,
WHEREAS, the present system of gauges and flow meters are a compilation of data from various agencies such as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U. S. Geological Survey (USGS), U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and local Government; and,
WHEREAS, all of these systems are dependent on budget for installation, maintenance, and repair which will provide critical information to save lives, protect property, and restore the environment; and,
WHEREAS, these budgets are not priority for these Agencies; and,
WHEREAS, various tropical and rain only events have shown failures in the ability for this method of data collection to be available when needed; and,
WHEREAS, the New Orleans District Commander, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has publicly stated the need for this data.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL, do hereby implore that the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquart...
