Proclamation: Fire Prevention Week in St. Charles Parish

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the Fire Prevention Week 2004 theme, “It's Fire Prevention Week: Test Your Smoke Alarms” is an important message for all citizens; and
WHEREAS, it is important that the community reflect on the seriousness of Fire Prevention Week; and,
WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week commemorates the great Chicago Fire of 1871 which killed more than 200 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings; and,
WHEREAS, a fire can spread rapidly and a quick escape from the home increases the chance of survival; and,
WHEREAS, smoke alarms have been proven an effective lifesaver, having helped to cut the home fire death rate by one half since their introduction to the general public; and,
WHEREAS, working smoke alarms are essential to every household and should be installed on every level of a home including garages and outside of each separate sleeping area; and,
WHEREAS, the local efforts of the fire service are supported by the activities of organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Congressional Fire Services Institute, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and its United States Fire Administration, the Fire Marshals Association of North America, the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Association of State Fire Marshals, the National Fire Protection Association, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and the Louisiana State Fire Chiefs Association.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM OCTOBER 3 - 9, 2004, AS
"FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
IN
ST. CHARLES PARISH"
