Body
P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, one in six households in Louisiana are at risk of hunger. Across our state and region, the rising cost of food, housing, and utilities, coupled with high unemployment and low-wage jobs have increased the need for emergency food assistance; and,
WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish Department of Community Services, in partnership with the coalition of food banks throughout the parish, is working together to call attention to the need to restock and maintain adequate food supplies in our local food banks; and,
WHEREAS, food collection sites will be established throughout St. Charles Parish to collect unexpired non-perishable foods to be evenly distributed to the local food pantries during the month of May. Saturday, June 4th will be "Need to Feed Day" where there will be a Fun 5K Run/Walk, children's activities, "Feed a Truck" (vehicles from the area will park for kids of all ages to explore), demonstrations, and a help/resource fair, sharing with the community services that are offered to them; and,
WHEREAS, food insecurity has become an increasing issue in St. Charles Parish. In 2021, the local food banks served approximately 29,480 people and approximately 11,792 families throughout St. Charles Parish; and,
WHEREAS, because of COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida with monthly distributions and mass distributions, many families that never expected to need assistance find themselves having to reach out; and,
WHEREAS, let us all join together to help feed America by starting with the citizens in our own parish.
