RESOLUTION NO.
Title
A resolution opposing the Spreading of Biosolids in the Greater New Orleans Landfill.
Body
WHEREAS, The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality has issued an exemption that will allow FTM and Associates to deposit sewage sludge at the Greater New Orleans Landfill (GNOL); and,
WHEREAS, there is currently a significant problem with odors at the GNOL that will only be made worse by spreading sewer sludge on the landfill; and,
WHEREAS, the site where the sludge will originate in St. James Parish is under scrutiny by the local community, the Center for Disease Control and the Department of Justice because of odor issues; and,
WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish Council and Parish President are concerned for the health, safety and welfare of the residents living near the landfill; and,
WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish Council and Parish President respectfully urge the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to deny a permanent permit until all investigations and concerns are satisfied.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL, AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, strongly request that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality ensure that FTM and Associates adhere to the December 31, 2004 deadline for the exemption and refrain from granting said firm a permanent permit until all investigations are satisfactorily concluded.
