Proclamation: Child Abuse Prevention Month

P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect is a problem, the solution for which depends upon the involvement of people throughout the community; and,
WHEREAS, child maltreatment occurs when people find themselves in stressful situations, without community resources, and unsure of how to cope with these challenges; and,
WHEREAS, the majority of child abuse cases stem from situations and conditions that are preventable in an engaged and supportive community; and,
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect not only directly harm children, but also increases the likelihood of future criminal behavior, substance abuse, health problems such as heart disease and obesity, and risky behavior such as smoking; and,
WHEREAS, all citizens should become involved in supporting families and raising their children in a safe nurturing environment; and,
WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social service agencies, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community; and,
WHEREAS, the month of April is hereby proclaimed to be Child Abuse Prevention Month in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, and the people of our city are urged to actively participate in the care and protection of our children.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE ST. CHARLES PARISH COUNCIL AND THE PARISH PRESIDENT, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM APRIL 2009 AS
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
